Work package 6: Analysis of impacts and opportunities in power system management
Objectives & methodology
- Overall aim:
To assess the impacts of, and the opportunities created by the mass introduction of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles onto the operation of the electrical system including transmission distribution and markets
- Specific objectives:
- Analyse the existing operational structure and procedures (state of the art)
- Define the technical and organizational gaps of the existing system
- Indicate how the system can overcome the potential difficulties
- Develop innovative control structures (architecture and processes) to ensure a successful mass introduction of EV
- Investigate opportunities to optimize the use of the system components
Tasks
-
Analysis of impacts on existing system management, proposals for dealing with them
- Overview of typical power flow management in Europe and how load variations are dealt with by the system (dispatching, markets, reserves, production mix, balancing mechanism)
- Based on the hypotheses of WP1 and WP2 regarding the arrival of EV and their behaviour, identification of the global impacts on the electrical system. Special attention will be paid on the future energy mix with high share of renewable energy.
- In relation with WP5, identification of the local impacts with respect to the grid type (meshed/rural, urban/rural, LV/HV) and grid control architecture
- Point by point analysis of the difficulties identified and proposal of least-cost or short term solutions
- Estimation of innovation operational processes and grid management
The main paradigm to investigate will be an active network with aggregation of local flexibility, but modular architecture and also local energy optimisation will be analysed:
- Analysis of opportunities for optimised coordination of EV in the markets and grid context; best integration of RES in European system using EV as storage
- Description of new structures within the operation management of grids
- Suggestions for functional upgrading of Supplier/DSO/TSO algorithms in grid operation
- Identification of barriers and proposal for further RTD activities
